Kathmandu, September 15

Newly elected leaders of 21 local units of various provinces have requested the central government to change their names, headquarters or both.

The Ministry of Federal Affairs and Local Development says it will study the proposals and submit them to the Cabinet for the final decision.

Five units have recommended changing names and six want to change headquarters. Rest 10 have suggested changing both names and headquarters.

Laws have it that the units can recommend changing the name or headquarters within six months of local level elections if majority of local leaders do not agree with the existing name or headquarters.

However, among 21 proposals received by the Ministry, one is from Rautahat district, which is yet to hold local level elections.
