A dispute has surfaced at Tribhuvan University after the dean of its Institute of Medicine retired on Thursday, four days after he was reinstated to the post by a court order.
While the university administration says that after Dr Sashi Sharma retired the post has fallen vacant, Dr Jagadish Agrawal, who was already working as the dean before the court order, says he still holds the post.
“We cannot say who will be appointed the new dean,” Registrar Dilli Ram Upreti told Onlinekhabar. “Until the university takes a decision, the post will remain vacant and the assistant dean will take charge for now,” added Upreti.
The university had sacked Sharma in January 2014 amid pressure from various quarters to address the demands of Dr Govinda KC, an orthopedic of the hospital, who had been on fast-unto-death for 12 days. His seven-point demand included the removal of Dr Sharma as IoM dean. He was reinstated by the court earlier this week.
“Although the court reinstated Dr Sharma, it has not deemed my appointment illegal,” said Dr Agrawal. “That is why no one can question my appointment,” he added.
Dr Agrawal said he has assumed his office on Friday.
Dr KC started his 12th hunger strike earlier this week in protest of Sharma’s reinstatement. After he questioned the Chief Justice on the reinstatement, he was arrested on a criminal contempt charge.
