More than 200 lawyers from Province 2 quit NBA, accuse Bar of betraying them

Kathmandu, February 9

Around 200 lawyers from Province 5 resigned en masse as Nepal Bar Association members, at NBA central office, in Kathmandu, on Thursday.

They were protesting the controversial appointment of high court judges. The lawyers submitted their resignation to NBA president Sher Bahadur KC.

In all, more than 250 lawyers, including NBA working committee members from Province 2 and others, submitted their resignation, Sudhir Kumar Karna, coordinator, Justice Appointment Struggle Committee, informed.

Government attorneys throughout the country had launched a movement at the call of NBA, which pointed that appointment of justices was not in keeping with the principle of proportionate inclusion. Later, lawyers from the province had accused NBA of making a compromise with the Supreme Court while the movement was going on.

Karna told Onlinekhabar: While we were waging the movement, NBA reached a deal with Supreme Court registrar and betrayed us. So, we tendered our resignation against this betrayal.

Before submitting their resignation, lawyers from the province shouted slogans on NBA premises. Karna said they will think about withdrawing their move if NBA scraps the deal with the Supreme Court and take initiatives for implementation of the proportionate-inclusive principle mentioned in the Constitution.
