Kathmandu, November 14
Nepal’s national football team’s captain Anil Gurung retired on Tuesday immediately after his 50th match as a member of the national team.
While playing as a national player for 10 years, Gurung scored 10 goals.
Gurung had got the chance to lead the team after senior team members including then captain Sagar Thapa and his deputy Sandeep Rai were banned from international football owing to a match-fixing accusation against them by Nepal Police and Asian Football Federation in 2014.
The striker’s level of performance, however, was falling for last two years and he had to struggle hard to be included in the national team.
Meanwhile, Gurung played his last match for around 10 minutes only. Replacing Sujal Shrestha, Gurung entered the stadium at the 82nd minute of the match between Nepal and Philippines played in Kathmandu today. The match ended in a goalless draw.
The All Nepal Football Association bid farewell to the 31-year-old striker amid a special function today.
